The Project
The International Association of Blacks in Dance needed the main graphics for the 34th Annual International Conference and Festival of Blacks in Dance. Taking place in Memphis, TN, the theme Can’t Turn You Loose: A Love Letter to Black Dance was inspired by music and artists signed to Stax Records that had an impact on Black culture in the South. The conference is presented in partnership with Collage Dance Collective.
The Process and Outcome
It was very important that the final graphics had a feeling of excitement and movement as well as a modern update to a vintage aesthetic. After receiving a description of the project and examples for inspiration, check-in meetings played a big role for changes in fonts, photo selection, and color choice. The bright colors and altered fonts help to capture the overall excitement while the texture adds a weathered feel to the presentation. The final versions were shared on social media and on the International Association of Blacks in Dance’s website.
